Walp, another day, another stay. This month I had the pleasure of patronizing The Walper Hotel located at the heart of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.
According to their website: “The Walper Hotel is named after it’s founder, Abel Walper. He commissioned the construction of the building (as it appears now) in 1893, following a fire that destroyed the previous hotel that stood in the same spot.”
Abel’s namesake, Abe the-very-handsome-Beta-fish (and his cohort), hope your stay goes swimmingly! He serves the front desk as the “Director of Guest Relations” so be sure to share any feedback with him – he’s a fintastic listener.
What’s it got?
Hospitality: out the wazoo! The staff here are uber friendly. Seriously, who has such a great time at work? But the diverse Walper crew is quick to crack a smile, a joke, and any residual ice between you with willingness to accommodate their guests. If you have a fave out of their unique rooms, it’s yours (if available). And if your pooch needs a getaway, they can stay too. Everything they do, they do for you – it’s the key to their success
Style: The Walper’s award winning décor blends classic luxury with approachable chic boutique. You’ll find your room past the lobby’s marbled floors and sweeping staircase, beyond the Crystal Ballroom, and the swanky Lokal bar with its grandish piano. You’re welcomed with a deep fluffy bed and an array of amenities (including the coziest bathrobe and best smelling hotel soap I’ve ever used). The whole place is smattered with classy kitsch, playful signage, and curated color that says The Walper Hotel knows it’s gorgeous but is still flattered you noticed.
Fab facilities: Besides the aforementioned lounges, ballrooms, and bars (oh my!) the Walper boasts a 24 hr fitness center, a top-notch restaurant, rooftop courtyards, and swanky hangouts throughout the hotel.
Location: The Walper nestles snugly in the center of Kitchener, surrounded by cafes, conveniences, and fabulous shops (such as Berlin Tattoo!*). There are several galleries nearby, THEMUSEUM is just across the street, and the expansive Victoria Park is a short walk away (so I’ve heard anyway, I’ll have to verify next time). This beautiful historic neighborhood is colorful in more ways than one – you never know what your party will encounter when you venture outside.
Fabulous Fare: The Walper’s breakfast pastries awakened a hunger for croissants I didn’t know I possessed. And their quality coffee was the perfect compliment! I look forward to returning just for this combo. Meanwhile I seek to fill the void in my soul those succulent strudel left.
Quality doesn’t stop with breakfast. The TWH Social Club’s robust yet accessible menu elevates even the simple club sandwich to something memorable. Freshly ground burgers are the pride of the kitchen that leave people as tickled pink as the inside of the patty. It’s a well done medium burger but if you’d prefer the center well done, give them a heads up. Don’t skip the gherkin!
The Lokal bar is rumored to be a fantastical affair I look forward to experiencing on my next visit! Check it out and tell me how you found it!
*Kitchener was Berlin, Canada. Now it’s Kitchener, not Berlin, Canada. Been a long time gone, Berlin, Canada (1916). Now it’s Oktober Fest for nine days and nights. Learning about the city’s German heritage made the Berlin Tattoo shop even more wunderbar! Well, it was wunderbar on its own merit, but the name made a lot more sense. Special thanks to Dom for my wicked sharp commemorative Kitchen(er) knife!
What’s it not?
Pretentious: The Walper presents as one of those intimidating pretty girls who is actually really cool and down to earth once you get to know her.
Tranquil: The place is hopping with private events, salsa dancing, and cocktail hour. The ballroom blitz winds down by about 11, but the surrounding neighborhood is bright and active. You’ll want to shut the blinds and maybe bring your noise canceling headphones.
A formal business venue: The Walper is happy to rig something up to accommodate your business needs, but if you’re expecting a classic boardroom without chandeliers (more like bored room, amirite?), prepare for the wurst. I really wanted to use that pun – it’s a gorgeous venue you should definitely book.
Child oriented: I’m sure they’re more than welcome, but with lots of delicate decor and no dedicated space for kids to play, it’s no Kindergarten.
A budget hotel: but it won’t break the bank either. In my humble opinion the prices reflect the hotel’s pride in itself and what it has to offer. Easily worth a little splurge. Get it, girl!
Final Thought
Funky, friendly, and affordable, The Walper Hotel is the spot for a stylish sojourn in Kitchener, Ontario. When your wanderlust takes you to Kitchener, no need to wonder where you’ll stay. Their zeitgeist of hospitality, and the historic locale mired in history, art, and nature, will leave you at a schloss.
